Asus Chairman Promises to Release Smart Watch This Year

From X-bit Labs: Asustek Computer, one of the leading makers of computers and PC components, demonstrated its first code-named Waveface smartwatch at the Consumer Electronics Show 2014. Looks like this year the gadget will finally become a reality.

Wearable computing devices are believed to be the next big thing. The problem is that few companies know how to design such gadgets in a way that end-users would actually wear and use them. At present Samsung Electronics and Sony Corp. offer smart-watch companion devices for their smartphones and tablets. Neither of the gadgets has become popular so far. As a result, the industry is watching closely on new wearable computer devices in hope to see a breakthrough product that will show the way to a new era.

At a meeting with investors last November, Asustek’s management told investors that this year the company would demonstrate its first wearable gadgets at Computex Taipei 2014 this June. At a New Year party at the company, chairman Jonney Shih confirmed plans to employees of the company, reports Focus Taiwan web-site.

“We will put our entire design thought into it. There are actually many challenges in this area, and I don't think products that lack special features will be useful. We'll try to replace your watch by all means,” said Mr. Shih.

Smart-watches nowadays look like the most promising form-factor for wearable electronics. However, it is not the only one that is already known. Google Glass-like head-mounted displays have a lot of potential and can potentially gain support from the Android creator. Given Asustek’s engineering skills, it could eventually offer such a device as well...

While there is no doubt that Asus can develop wearable electronics, it remains to be seen whether the company can create appropriate software to make its devices actually useful. Without software, smart-watches will not be really smart…
