From X-bit Labs: Nokia Corp. has introduced its first, and probably last, smartphones based on Google Android operating system. The handsets feature a special version of Google’s platform with Windows Phone-like interface and provides basic functionality. Nokia will target emerging markets with its Nokia X devices.
The lineup of Nokia X smartphones powered by heavily-modified Google Android operating system includes three models – X (4” display, 512MB RAM, 3MP camera), X+ (4” display, 768MB RAM, 5MP camera) and XL (5” display, 768MB RAM, 5MP camera) – and is powered by dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 system-on-chip. The handsets sport 800*480 screen resolution, 4GB of NAND flash memory, ambient light sensor, accelerometer, proximity sensor, 2G/3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, two SIM cards, etc. The Nokia X smartphones are designed to resemble simplistic design of Lumia and feature volume keys, “back key” and lock key.
The Nokia X family boasts with tile-based user interface inspired by Lumia family and Windows Phone operating system. All devices come with Fastlane, a screen which lets people switch between their favorite apps more smoothly. People can access curated, quality-tested apps from Nokia Store, more than a dozen third-party app stores and by side-loading. Out of the box, they can enjoy signature Nokia experiences including free Here Maps and Nokia MixRadio for free music streaming and downloadable playlists. All devices are also pre-loaded with a variety of third-party apps and games.
The Nokia X family is also an affordable introduction to popular Microsoft services, including free cloud storage using OneDrive. With the purchase of any Nokia X family smartphone in select markets, people will get one month of Skype's Unlimited World Subscription for a limited time, ideal to make international calls to landlines in more than 60 countries and to mobile phones in 8 countries.
The Nokia X will go on sale immediately, starting at €89 and rolling-out in Asia-Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The Nokia X+ and Nokia XL are expected to roll out in these markets starting early second quarter, priced at €99 and €109, respectively.
