From X-bit Labs: Advanced Micro Devices has announced the introduction of its AM1 platform featuring the AMD quad-core and dual-core “Kabini” APU into the component channel for system builders. The low-cost/low-power chips in pin-grid array (PGA) packaging will offer additional flexibility to system makers who want to create tailored PCs for their customers in developing countries.
Traditionally, AMD sold its low-cost/low-power accelerated processing units for desktops as APUs soldered to mini-ITX mainboards. This allowed AMD’s partners to easily affordable systems with AMD inside, but did not provide enough flexibility since different customers want different PC configurations when it comes to input/output ports. Besides, some people in developing countries want upgradeability options.
“AMD continues our APU technology leadership by introducing the AM1 platform with ‘Socketed Kabini’, an APU designed for the mainstream market. The AM1 platform gives us a great opportunity to deliver a flexible infrastructure environment, and provides a multitude of options for consumers and system builders looking for upgradeability packed into an extremely affordable solution,” said Bernd Lienhard, corporate vice president and general manager of client business unit at AMD.
The new accelerated processing units in AM1 form-factor will be available under well-known Athlon and Sempron brand-names. Those new APUs are based on the code-named “Kabini” design that sports two or four AMD Jaguar x86 cores, AMD Radeon graphics engines with GCN architecture, DDR3 memory controllers and so on. The AM1 platform utilizes FS1b sockets which are also used by AMD’s mobile platforms, hence, potentially owners of AM1 systems will be able to upgrade to a mobile AMD chip with higher performance. Like other Kabini-based platforms, the AM1 supports two Serial ATA-6Gb/s, two USB 3.0, eight USB 2.0, PCI Express 2.0 x4, DisplayPort, HDMI and D-Sub outputs.
The motherboard manufacturers including, Asrock, Asustek, Biostar, ECS, Gigabyte and MSI are poised to deliver a range of next- generation desktop microATX and miniITX motherboards based on socket FS1b.
Availability of “Kabini” desktops and components are slated to be on-shelf in select regions beginning early April, with global availability expected on April 9.
