Smile! HTC's Desire 820 packs selfie-friendly 8 megapixel front camera, 64-bit processor

From GreenBot: A little more than six months after HTC revealed the 5.5-inch Desire 816, the company is following up with its successor, the Desire 820. The new phone announced at IFA Berlin on Thursday is notable for its future-proof double-quad-core 64-bit processor and insane, selfie-ready 8-megapixel front camera.

The Desire 820 isn't the first phone to feature a 64-bit CPU—that honor goes to HTC's Desire 510 announced in late August. But the 510 is solidly in the low-end range of the market with its ho-hum screen resolution, paltry RAM, and meager storage. The new Desire 820, on the other hand, is a more upscale mid-range phone.

It would be tough to call the Desire 820 a high-end handset due to its 720p display in an era when even 1920-by-1080 isn't HD enough for most top-tier phones.

Nevertheless, there's a lot to like about the Desire 820. Beyond the 5.5-inch 720p display, the device has the aforementioned Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 64-bit CPU with 1.5GHz and 1 GHz quad-core CPUs that switch on and off depending on the performance needs of your current activity. The 820 will ship with an unspecified 32-bit build of Android. The 64-bit compatible Android L is on the horizon, but when Android L will actually arrive on pre-existing handsets is anybody's guess.
