From DailyTech: Despite website glitches that hindered customers’ ability to pre-order the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on September 12, and a tight supplies of the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple is reporting that it has set another record for opening weekend iPhone sales.
Apple managed to top 10 million sales during the first three days of availability for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus – an increase of a million units compared to the last year’s launch. While the increase in sales by one million units year-over-year (YoY) is commendable, it’s nowhere near as impressive as the YoY growth from 2012 to 2013. Apple sold five million units during the opening weekend for the iPhone 5 compared to nine million units for the iPhone 5C/iPhone 5S.
Apple previously concluded that consumers wanted what it didn’t have [at the time] when it came to smartphones with screens larger than 4”. So now that Apple has responded with not one, but two large-screen iPhones, the sales numbers don’t exactly wow us at first glance (even when you take into account the supply issues with the iPhone 6 Plus). However, it should also be noted that this year's numbers don't include sales in China, as the phones haven't launched in that country yet. China sales were included last year's iPhone 5C/iPhone 5S numbers.
“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible.”
