BlackBerry Reports Another $200M Loss, Touts 200K Passport Sales

From DailyTech: After months of teases, BlackBerry officially announced its flagship Passport smartphone on Wednesday. Today, the company is reporting its results for fiscal Q2 2015 and while things are getting better financially, the tech company is still losing money.

BlackBerry reported revenue of $916 million versus the $940 million that analysts forecast. Revenue was comprised of 46 percent hardware, 46 percent services, and 8 percent for software. Speaking to the services numbers, BlackBerry recorded 3.4 million licenses for BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 (BES10) during the quarter, which represented a three-fold increase from the previous quarter.

As for hardware, sales of BlackBerry smartphones were down quarter-over-quarter from 2.6 million in fiscal Q1 2015 to 2.1 million in fiscal Q2 2015. The 2.1 million figure is way down from the [already low] 5.9 million smartphone sales during fiscal Q2 2014. The downward trending performance in smartphones jives with the company’s 0.5 percent share of the global smartphone market.

The company reported a net loss of $207 million ($0.39/share) for the quarter, which is much improved from the $965 million loss BlackBerry experienced under the helm of Thorsten Heins during the same period last year. As of August 30, 2014, Blackberry has $3.1 billion on hand in cash, cash equivalents, and short/long-term investments.
