Amazon Teases Game, App Discounts for 'Digital Day'

From PC Mag: Christmas has come and gone, but holiday shopping deals aren't over yet at Amazon, which is planning a first-of-its-kind "Digital Day" on Friday that will discount movies, TV shows, music, apps, and games by as much as 80 percent.

Amazon will offer the deepest price cuts on video games, while movies and TV shows will sell for up to 50 percent off, and other content like comics and apps will receive discounts of up to 75 percent.

Moving video games to the top of the discount stack will likely please gamers who didn't get what they wanted during last week's Steam sale. Thanks to its subsidiary Twitch, a live video-based social network for gamers, Amazon has become a formidable player in the video game market lately, and it appears that Digital Day is designed to bolster that position.

The first deals will go live at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, and include discounts on Rocket League, Titanfall 2, FIFA 17, and Madden NFL 17. Norton Security Deluxe, Microsoft Office, and TurboTax are also part of the sale, though specific discounts haven't been announced yet.

Digital Day is reminiscent of Prime Day, an annual summer event that gives Amazon Prime members exclusive access to discounts on a variety of both digital and non-digital products. In 2015, some Prime members complained about Prime Day's lackluster deals and quick sellout times. Since Digital Day's sale items are primarily software downloads, the sellout risk is slightly lower, but it's still worth signing up to recieve updates if you've got your eye on a particular app, show, or game.
