Next Year's iPhone May Use a Slim Bezel LCD

From PC Mag: The border we see around the displays on smartphones today are due to the design of the LCD panels they use. The borders are required to hide the screen connectors and other wiring that allow the display to function. However, next year those borders are expected to disappear, with the successor to the iPhone 8 expected to be almost bezel-free while still using an LCD panel.

The reason for this change is the development of Full Active LCD panels by Japan Display. Mass production of these new displays was announced in June, with a 6-inch 18:9 screen being the focus. What Japan Display has managed to do is design a new high-density wiring layout which cuts the required screen bezel down to just 0.5mm. Until now it has been several millimeters.

As reported by 9to5Mac, Apple is thought to be considering Full Active LCD for the successor to the iPhone 8$699.99 at Verizon Wireless. So while the iPhone X$999.00 at Verizon Wireless and whatever its successor is called relies on OLED, the iPhone 9 can potentially go near bezel-free while continuing to use an LCD panel. Other benefits of Full Active LCD include deeper blacks, the ability to operate the touchscreen even with wet fingers, and the option to use them in a curved display.
