Nokia Siemens Confirms Use of Its Network Optimization Technology in iOS 4.2

From DailyTech: Apple may be preparing to bring out the big guns to fight Nokia in court over alleged patent violations, but that isn't stopping Nokia Siemens from tooting its own horn about a piece of its technology that has cropped up in iOS 4.2.

IOS 4.2 was officially released for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad last week. While the update was mostly a big deal for iPad users (iOS 4.2 unifies the codebase between the three aforementioned devices), Nokia points out that the iOS 4.2 also includes support for its Network Controlled Fast Dormancy Technology.

According to Nokia, Network Controlled Fast Dormancy allows for the iPhone to more efficiently communicate with cell networks and helps to decrease network congestion. In addition, this allows for better battery life for users.

“Nokia Siemens Networks introduced a method that, instead of putting the handset into idle or keeping it always active, keeps the handset in an intermediate state, stated Leslie Shannon of Nokia Siemens' Network Systems’ Mobile Broadband team. "From here, a smartphone can wake up much more quickly and needs to send far fewer signals to and from the network to start a data connection. You get a fast network response and a longer battery life."

Nokia Siemens states that it came to the realization that Apple was using this technology by conducting tests of its own rather than working directly with Apple. It's also quite interesting that Apple didn't come out and boast about the use of the technology when iOS 4.2 was released considering the benefit for its battered U.S. partner, AT&T.
