Intel Unleashes Atom System-on-Chip for Set-Top-Boxes

From X-bit Labs: Intel Corp. on Tuesday introduced code-named Berryville system-on-chip designed for set-top boxes (STBs) and similar devices. STBs powered by Intel Atom CE5300 media processor are projected to become available later this year from various service providers.

The Intel Atom CE5300 media processor (Berryville) sports two Atom cores with support for Hyper-Threading and virtualization, an advanced 3D/2D graphics engine, integrated power management, H.264 B-picture hardware encoder and so on. The chip is made using 32nm process technology.

The Atom CE5300 system-on-chip aimed at the next generation of set-top boxes and media gateways (which include a modem, VoIP processor, router, tuners, applications processor and sometimes even hard disk drives). The chipmaker claims that CE5300’s performance, graphics, power management and user interface improvements in this new product family enables service providers to deploy comprehensive and immersive connected experiences such as the new Amino Freedom Live media gateway which can deliver content seamlessly to TVs, smartphones and tablets around the home.

The new media processor from Intel will be marketed by Intel’s service provider division (SPD), which was created last October when the company wound down its retail digital TV business. Intel’s SPD targets telecommunication companies, and cable multi-service operators (MSOs), and satellite with its SoCs. Intel continues to target the Smart TV experience through various platform solutions for service providers and over the last year leading service providers have announced or launched products on Intel silicon.
