AMD Lowers Recommended Pricing of Latest Graphics Cards

From X-bit Labs: Advanced Micro Devices this week lowered recommended pricing on some of its latest "Southern Islands" graphics cards and also said that it would provide three new video games for free with the purchase of high-end graphics boards. The decision will likely help AMD to improve its positions on the market of enthusiast-class graphics boards.

From now on, ATI Radeon HD 7970 should cost $479, ATI Radeon HD 7950 carries $399 price-tag and ATI Radeon HD 7770 has suggested e-tail price of $139. The price drops will make the model HD 7970 more competitive against Nvidia Corp.'s GeForce GTX 680 and will position the HD 7950 as a viable competitor for the GeForce GTX 580 and 570.

In addition, with the purchase of the Radeon HD 7900-series graphics cards, AMD will provide three DirectX 11 game titles: Dirt Showdown, Nexuiz and Deus Ex: Human Revolution with The Missing Link downloadable add-on. As a result, the complete value of the latest AMD graphics cards promises to be pretty high.

The price drop onto graphics cards which are powered by chips produced using 28nm process technology may indirectly indicate improved availability of Southern Islands graphics processing units and therefore better yields at TSMC's foundry.

The new Radeon HD 7700- and 7900-series graphics cards support all the advantages that the graphics core next (GCN) architecture has to offer, including support for DirectX 11.1, OpenCL 1.2, PCI Express 3.0, AMD Eyefinity 2.0, ultra high-definition output support using DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.4a, optimized power consumption, integrated 7.1 audio controller, stereo-3D/Blu-ray 3D support, and other new technologies.
