Lenovo Sets up New Mobile Development Facility in Wuhan, China

From DailyTech: Lenovo has established the Lenovo Industrial Base in Wuhan, China, which will have facilities for mobile internet product research and development. The total investment in the new facility over the next five years is expected to be about roughly RMB 5 billion ($792 million USD).

The facility is set to open in October 2013 and will be mainly focused on R&D, production, and sales for smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices for Chinese and global markets.

Lenovo's expecting total sales revenue from the new industrial facility to reach RMB 10 billion by 2014 ($1.58 billion USD).

“As an industry leader, we are aggressively moving forward into the PC Plus era, and with our Mobile Internet Digital Home group actively engaged, we are accelerating development in smart phones, tablets, and other mobile Internet terminal markets," said Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo Group chairman and CEO.

"We’re determined to firmly seize the tremendous opportunities for innovation in this market, so that Lenovo's customers have even more opportunities to own our award-winning products, from PCs to mobile Internet devices. “When it begins operations, the Lenovo (Wuhan) Industrial Base will greatly improve our innovative capability and further optimize our supply chain, giving us a solid foundation to win in a broader market.”

Between 2014 and 2019, Lenovo expects to generate RMB 50 billion ($7.9 billion USD) in revenue from the facility. The new facility will create 10,000 job opportunities in the coming years for related businesses. Lenovo also expects to employ several thousand R&D and management staff at the new location.
