Intel Discontinues Core i Sandy Bridge Microprocessors

From X-bit Labs: Intel Corp. this week announced that it would cease to produce and supply multitude of Core i-series "Sandy Bridge" microprocessors for desktops in LGA1155 packaging since the chips are outdated and it is unlikely that demand towards them will be high among PC makers and end-users.

Among the discontinued products are boxed and tray versions of Intel Core processors i5-2310, i5-2320, i5-2400S, i5-2400, i5-2405S, i5-2500, i5-2500K, i5-2500S, i5-2500T, i7-2600, 7-2600K, i7-2600S as well as i7-2700K. It is likely that in the coming weeks and months the world's largest chipmaker will also reveal plans to discontinue other desktop and mobile products made using 32nm process technology as more advanced microprocessors manufactured at 22nm node are available widely.

Discontinuance of performance-mainstream and high-performance Sandy Bridge processors indicates that Intel will fulfill demand towards advanced central processing units in LGA1155 form-factor using its Core i-series "Ivy Bridge" chips, which will likely make them slightly more affordable.

Intel customers who need the outdated chips for specific personal computers will need to place their orders before March 29, 2013. Intel will ship the last tray versions of the aforementioned chips by September 27, 2013, whereas boxed flavours will be available while supplies last.
