Samsung Set to Stop Selling Windows RT-Based Ativ Tab Media Tablets in Europe

From X-bit Labs: Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s largest consumer electronics companies as well as a leading maker of personal computers, will stop selling its Ativ Tab media tablet powered by Microsoft Corp.’s Windows RT operating system. The company cited low demand towards the device powered by the controversial operating system.

Samsung will cease to offer Ativ Tab media tablet in Germany and other European countries, a spokesperson for Samsung told Heise.de web-site. The official for the company cited weak sales forecasts for the media slate that relies on operating system which has so far failed to capture acceptance by the end-users. The company will continue to sell its Ativ Smart PC and Ativ Smart PC Pro tablets powered by Windows 8 operating system.

Samsung Ativ Tab media tablets are based on dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz system-on-chip and come with 10.1” multi-touch display (1366*768), 32GB/64GB storage space as well as 2GB of random access memory. The slate is equipped with Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, HDM output, NFC, 5MP camera with LED flash, 1.9MP front-facing camera.

The reason for weak demand towards devices powered by Microsoft Windows RT operating system is its incompatibility with existing Windows software and limited amount of apps written Metro interface (which are compatible with both Windows 8 and Windows RT). For this reason, Samsung has not launched Ativ Tab in the U.S.

While Microsoft yet has to launch its Surface media tablet in Europe, currently there are Asus VivoTab RT, Dell XPS 10 and Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11 based on Windows RT OS available in the region.
