Nvidia Introduces GeForce GTX 770: 680 Gets Renamed and Speed-Bumped

From X-bit Labs: Nvidia Corp. on Thursday introduced its new graphics solution called GeForce GTX 770. The solution is not completely new, but a re-badged GeForce GTX 680 with higher clocks, a new cooling system and lower price. While the GTX 770 is not all-new graphics card, the combination of its performance, whisper quiet cooling system and price will likely please the gamers.

The GeForce GTX 770 is based on good-old GK104 graphics chip with 1536 stream processors, 128 texture units, 32 raster operating units as well as 256-bit memory bus. The chip is clocked at 1046MHz (up 40MHz from the GTX 680), whereas 2GB of memory operate at whopping 7GHz (up 1GHz from the GTX 680). The novelty fully supports modern high-end features like DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.3, OpenCL 1.2, stereoscopic-3D, 4 multi-monitor capability, PhysX, 4-way multi-GPU, PCI Express 3.0 and so on.

While the GeForce GTX 770 closely resembles the GeForce GTX 680, as they are powered by the same GPU with the same configuration, it will still be a tad faster thanks to slightly higher clock rate of the graphics chip as well as up to 16% faster in memory bandwidth-demanding cases.

As a result of the frequency increases, the new GeForce GTX 770 should become a formidable competitor for AMD’s Radeon HD 7970 when it comes to performance. However, in terms of value the HD 7970, which sells for $399 - $450, will still look a bit better thanks to three AAA-class games (Crysis 3, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider 2013) that come bundled with the card.

Just like its older brother, the GeForce GTX 780, the model 770 features latest-generation cooling system from Nvidia, which is powerful enough to cool down one of the world’s hottest graphics processing units, yet is whisper quiet.

"Only Nvidia GPUs consistently provide gamers with the ability to achieve extremely fast frame rates at high-definition resolutions with all of the eye candy turned on. The GeForce GTX 770 represents a new threshold of performance and features for under $400 and our commitment to PC gaming is why GeForce GPUs continue to be the No. 1 choice of gamers worldwide," said Scott Herkelman, general manager of the GeForce GPU business at Nvidia.
