AMD Plans to Discontinue Dual-Chip Radeon HD 7990 Graphics Card

From X-bit Labs: Advanced Micro Devices intends to discontinue dual-chip Radeon HD 7990 graphics card later this quarter in a bid to free market space for next-generation offerings. Keeping in mind that level of performance offered by the HD 7990 is similar to product that have been available on the market since May, 2012, it is logical for AMD to get rid of it before launching its all-new graphics products.

In a bid to avoid unnecessary competition between Radeon HD 7990 and next-generation Radeon HD graphics card based on yet unannounced graphics processing units (GPUs) which presumably belong to Radeon HD 9000-series range, AMD intends to discontinue the dual-chip graphics card, reports Overclockers.ru web-site.

AMD Radeon HD 7990 graphics card (code-named Malta) carries two Tahiti XT (Radeon HD 7970) graphics processing units (GPUs) clocked at 950MHz – 1000MHz and 6GB of GDDR5 memory onboard operating at 6.0GHz (288GB/s per-GPU bandwidth). Thanks to two AMD Tahiti XT graphics chips, the dual-chip graphics solution has 4096 stream processors, 256 texture units, 64 render back ends and so on. The graphics card is equipped with a 48-lane PCIe bridge from PLX that provides whopping 96GB/s inter-GPU bandwidth.

While proprietary dual-chip graphics cards based on AMD Radeon HD 7970 GPUs have been available for about a year now, the reference dual-GPU solution was only revealed in April, 2013. As it appears, the life of the Radeon HD 7990 will be rather short since it should become unavailable by Fall.
