Apple to Hold iPad Event on October 22, Looks to Steal Microsoft’s Surface 2 Thunder

From DailyTech: Microsoft is set to launch its all-new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets on October 22. The new tablets include faster hardware, upgraded displays, and snazzy new touch/type covers. However, Apple isn’t about to let Microsoft have it day in the sun all alone — it plans to launch its next generation iPad tablets on the same day.

According to AllThingsD, the event will focus mainly on the fifth generation iPad and the second generation iPad mini. The new iPad will likely feature a more powerful version of the new 64-bit A7 processor that was introduced on the iPhone 5s. Recent reports also suggest that the standard iPad will also incorporate Touch ID and will feature a thinner body patterned after the smaller iPad mini.

The second generation iPad mini is widely rumored to ditch its laggard 1024x768 display for a sharper 2048x1536 unit (this addition will reportedly make the new mini a hard to find item at launch). AllThingsD says that the new iPad mini will also make use of Apple’s A7 processors, although we suspect that it won’t be packing the same amount of firepower as its bigger brother.

AllThingsD also reports that the completely redesigned Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks will make appearances at the event.
