Equipped with the latest Phison E12 controller, is the Patriot Viper VPN100 512GB the solid state drive for the enthusiast? If I were to rate it on looks alone, I would call it a winner -- it certainly looks the part. The massive Viper-branded aluminum heatsink with six thermal fins just makes it look so much more intense. But the VPN100 is not just all show and no go. It is rated at 3300MB/s read, 2200MB/s write, 700,000 IOPS random read, and 480,000 IOPS random write, which are very competitive numbers. According to our tests, the Viper SSD's performance was very comparable to the ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 512GB; trading punches here and there if not taking a slight edge overall. It even managed to do well in our extremely intense storage consistency test and outperformed the SX8200 Pro on average by a small margin. But if there is anything the Patriot Viper VPN100 512GB stands out from the crowd in, it would be its epic 800TBW write endurance. I have never seen anything with such high write endurance, which is more than twice the SX8200 Pro and Western Digital Black SN750 of the same capacity. What you will not get, however, is long warranty. Patriot only includes a 3-year warranty, whereas the rest of the competition guarantee their products for five years. For about $83 at press time, the VPN100 is $8 more than the SX8200 Pro. Both are excellent drives; if you are looking for slightly more performance, a cooler looking heatsink, and epic write endurance and you do not mind giving up two years of warranty in the process, the Patriot Viper VPN100 will be my pick for the money.
