About AIDA64 Engineer

AIDA64 implements a set of 64-bit benchmarks to measure how fast the computer performs various data processing tasks and mathematical calculations. Memory and cache benchmarks are available to analyze system RAM bandwidth and latency. Processor benchmarks utilize MMX, SSE, XOP, FMA, AVX and AVX2 instructions, and scale up to 128 processor threads. For legacy processors all benchmarks are available in 32-bit version as well. AIDA64 Disk Benchmark determines the data transfer speed of hard disk drives, solid-state drives, optical drives, and flash memory based devices.

Since our storage review benchmark results are presented in alphabetical order, first up on the list are results from one of our favorite benchmarking programs, AIDA64 Engineer. Just to note, AIDA64 Engineer is a full synthetic benchmark. Unlike full synthetic motor oil, this usually does not always carry a good connotation. While it is not a representation of real life performance (Such as how fast you can copy movies to your drive), it does provide valuable insight into performance variation between drives from different manufacturers. As you can see in our graphs above, the Western Digital Red started off mid pack in the beginning of the drive, but dropped off to last place in the Linear Read test as we move in to the middle and end of the drive. Meanwhile, the Hitachi Deskstar NAS 4TB, being the only 7,200 RPM hard disk in the test, scored the most amount of first places in this set of benchmarks. Seagate's 5,900 RPM NAS HDD ST4000VN000 4TB and Western Digital's 5,400 RPM Red WD40EFRX 4TB duked it out for the remainder of the results. I am actually quite pleased with the Red's 16.36ms tested random access time. It striked a balance between Hitachi's 15.13ms and Seagate's 17.48ms.
