Chilean Miners Entertained By Samsung Galaxy Beam

From DailyTech: Unless you've been stuck in a coal mine yourself, the phrase "Chilean miners" needs no further explanation. Their hopeful story has been told and re-told throughout the media for the last few months, and will ultimately go down as one of the biggest news stories of the year. Recently, the miners' narrative has been focused on the various items sent down to entertain and support the 33 men -- one of which is the Samsung Galaxy Beam device.

Korean news outlet The Chosunilbo is reporting that a Samsung Galaxy Beam Android projector phone, pre-loaded with an encouraging message from Chile's Mining Minister and an exhibition Chile-Ukraine soccer game, was sent down to the miners for entertainment.

The device, profiled by Engadget in June, sports a built-in DLP pico projector that the miners used to project the content onto a wall. The handset is called the Haptic Beam in Korea and is also currently available in Singapore. It also boasts a 3.7" Super AMOLED touchscreen, Android 2.1, Bluetooth 3.0, an 8-megapixel camera with flash and HD video recording, a front-facing VGA camera, and an 1800 mAH battery. Luckily, none of the men complained about the lack of Froyo -- a testament to their good-spiritedness.

"We're proud that our technology could play a part in this mining miracle," a Samsung spokesperson told The Chosunilbo.

The Beam is just one of the many items reportedly sent down the mine shaft to keep the men entertained. Amongst other things, Sony PSPs were also sent down to lift the men's spirits.
