From Forbes: Huawei’s next flagship, the P40, is on its way—that is now confirmed. There had been some speculation that the phone would launch at February’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. But the company’s smartphone boss, Richard Yu, has now said the launch will be in Paris a month later, at the end of March. The exec also told French media that the device will have a new “never seen” design alongside improved performance and battery life and, unsurprisingly, a brilliant new camera.
As with the launch of Huawei’s last flagship, the Mate 30, in September, all eyes are now on how the company compensates for the loss of Google’s software and services from the device—that loss has become the poster child for the U.S. blacklist of Huawei, preventing American companies from supplying the company. And here Yu also provided some clarity. The new P40 will not carry Google—the blacklist remains in effect after all. But here’s where the high-stakes gamble comes in—at least according to Yu. The P40 will fill the Google-shaped gap with a fully-fledged Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). And that means a suite of replacement apps.
