From PC Mag: MediaTek, the world's number-one smartphone chipset maker by volume, announced its first true top-of-the-line chip this week at a company event. The Dimensity 9000 is packed with new features, including first-of-its-kind ARM Cortex-X2 cores and three-carrier 5G aggregation.
"We are able to improve performance 35% compared to today's Android flagships," meaning Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 used in the Samsung Galaxy S21, said Yen-Chi Lee, Deputy General Manager of MediaTek's smartphone business unit. The chip has 35% better GPU performance than "today's Android flagship," he said.
When it compares itself to Qualcomm, MediaTek is being just a touch disingenuous. The Snapdragon 888 is nearly a year old now and will be replaced by a new chip in two weeks at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit. But Qualcomm hasn't released details of that new chip yet.
The Dimensity 9000 uses standard core designs from ARM, although MediaTek chooses which cores, in what arrangement, with a particular bus and other components. As Qualcomm also relies on standard ARM CPU cores nowadays, its next-generation pure-CPU performance will likely be similar to the Dimensity 9000's. Qualcomm said this week that it is returning to designing custom cores using a team acquired from startup Nuvia, but the fruit of that labor won't be available until late next year.
