Pentagon's Anthropic Blacklisting Ruled Illegal By US Judge

From PC Mag: The Department of Defense's (DOD) move to blacklist Anthropic's AI tools earlier this year was illegal, according to a ruling by a San Francisco federal judge.

The AI company was deemed a supply chain risk by the Pentagon in March, but a new ruling by U.S. District Judge Rita Lin says the move violated the First Amendment and was unconstitutional.

Lin wrote in the ruling, “Though the Department of War is undisputedly free to select the AI vendor of its choice, the evidence demonstrates that the broad measures imposed on Anthropic were illegal and baseless.”

Lin said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s choice to add Anthropic to the list of supply chain risks was “arbitrary and capricious.” Lin continues, “The empty invocation of national security is not a blank check to punish and retaliate against government critics.”
