From PC Mag: Elon Musk’s upcoming chip factory, Terafab, is facing a brewing legal battle over its name. That’s because an Illinois-based company called Tera-Print has already been using the “TERA-fab” term for its own photolithography machines.
On Tuesday, Musk’s companies, SpaceX, Tesla and SpaceXAI filed a trademark rights lawsuit in a US district court against Tera-Print. The complaint reveals that Tera-Print sent a cease-and-desist letter to the companies after Musk announced in March his plans to build Terafab, which promises to churn out cutting-edge processors for his orbiting data centers, humanoid robots, electric cars, and more.
In the cease-and-desist letter sent in May, “TERA-print claimed that Plaintiffs’ use of Terafab is likely to cause confusion with TERA-print’s TERA-FAB line of products and therefore infringes TERA-print’s purported TERA-FAB trademark,” the 45-page complaint says.
Tera-Print not only demanded Musk’s companies discontinue using the Terafab name, but also threatened to sue “for federal trademark infringement, common law trademark infringement, false designation of origin, and state-law unfair competition,” the complaint adds.
