How many ways are there to do something? A few years ago, I went to Dallas, Texas for a work trip. One of my friends decided to make the trip at the same time so he can stay with me in my hotel -- which is conveniently a suite with multiple bedrooms -- for free. Now, the problem with flying non-stop from Calgary to Dallas is expensive for the distance traveled. American Airlines is the only airline that flies this route, so they charge about $1000 CAD round trip for the 4-hour flight no matter when you book. Flights with one stop from competing airlines are not significantly cheaper, and the schedules for those are simply terrible. The ticket price was not an issue for me as a business traveler, but for my friend who was traveling recreationally, it just seemed like a bad deal. Just as he was about to cancel his travel plans, I made an alternative itinerary suggestion: Fly to Houston instead, and drive to Dallas. A non-stop round-trip flight to Houston from Calgary can be purchased for as low as $300, and since he was going to rent a car anyway, it was just the cost of gas and a few hours on the road. He decided that was indeed a good plan, so he went with it, and the trip was a resounding success. As it can be seen, we can always be a little bit creative to do what we want to do while saving money, all without breaking any rules. In a similar way, if you want to buy a 1000W Seasonic Gold PSU in 2026, you could fork over $190 to get the FOCUS GX-1000 ATX 3.1 1000W. Alternatively, you can pick up the Fractal Design Ion 3 Gold 1000W, which is quite literally the same thing inside -- other than the fan model -- for $30 less. How is this possible? Are there catches? Read on to find out!
Our review unit of the Fractal Design Ion 3 Gold 1000W arrived in a medium-sized brown corrugated cardboard box from the company's American headquarters in The Colony, Texas, USA. The Colony is a city within the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Our Ion 3 Gold 1000W arrived in excellent condition to us here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for our review today using UPS Standard,
As you can see from my photo above, Fractal Design's retail box design for the Ion 3 Gold 1000W comes from the same template as the rest of the company's current product portfolio. The environmentally friendly -- or economically friendly, depending on your perspective -- white corrugated cardboard box with a brown sleeve has all the contents printed in white ink. On the sleeve, you will find Fractal Design's logo, the "Ion 3 Gold 1000W" product name, and the line "Experience Gaming" in very small font. The opposite side has basically the same content, except all in tiny font and has a QR code that leads you to the product page. The label at the bottom contains the regulatory information and serial number. There is minimal waste in packing material, and the box is easily recyclable, reducing its environmental impact.
