From X-bit Labs: LG Electronics, one of the world’s largest consumer electronics companies, said it had no plans to stop production of plasma TVs even after Panasonics Corp. pulled the plug on the technology. The South Korea-based TV maker believes that plasma will continue to be important part of its product family due to demand from the end-user. Still, LG admits: plasma is not the future of the TVs.
“We recognize the importance of offering consumers choice. Plasma TVs continue to prove popular with consumers, offering large screen sizes at competitive prices, and therefore remain an important part of LG’s TV lineup," a statement by the company published by WhatHiFi web-site reads.
But although customers will have the choice for some time from now, LG believes that the future of high-definition and ultra-high-definition TV belongs to LED and OLED TV-sets. Given the fact that LG has already introduced its OLED TVs in South Korea, it is obvious that the company believes in this technology. In addition, the company has introduced curved OLED TVs.
"LG believes that LED and OLED represent the future of home entertainment and provide a spectacular viewing experience,” the statement reads.
Panasonic, one of the world’s biggest supporters of plasma TV technology, recently announced plans to end production of appropriate panels citing soft demand from end-users as well as advancements in LCD and other technologies. Sony has stopped production of plasma TVs years ago.
