Sony PlayStation 4 Set to Outsell Xbox One Significantly – Analyst

From X-bit Labs: Based on officially released technical specs, Sony Corp.’s PlayStation 4 is considerably more powerful than Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox One. In theory, this will result into better games for the former. Better games mean higher sales of hardware for platform holders. According to market analysts, this is exactly what is going to happen to PS4 versus Xbox One.

“We expect Sony's PS4 to 'win' the next console generation,” said Michael Pachter, an analyst Wedbush Morgan, reports Industry Gamers web-site.

The market observer predicts that Sony’s PS4 will outsell Microsoft’s Xbox One by nearly 30% by the end of 2016, a whopping amount. Based on his projections, Sony will sell through 37.7 million PS4 consoles, Microsoft will ship 29 million Xbox One systems to gamers, whereas sales of Nintendo Wii U will be much lower at around 20 million units.

“We think ‘winning’ is important to both companies [Sony and Microsoft] and it is possible that Microsoft will reduce Xbox One pricing far faster than we have forecasted. Should hardware prices come down faster than we have modeled, it is likely that hardware and software sales will grow faster,” said Mr Pachter.

Over the next two years all console makers will have to cut down prices. It is expected that the PS4 will cost $299, Xbox One will cost $349 and Wii U will cost $150 by late 2016.

It has to be noted that game consoles these days compete not only between each other, but also against mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Given the fact that according to the market observer, a "disproportionately high percentage of Nintendo customers play more casual games," it makes the platform more vulnerable to competition from mobile gadgets given the decreasing difference in quality of games.
