Shipments of Xbox One Total 3.9 Million Units

From X-bit Labs: Microsoft Corp. has announced that life-to-date sales of Microsoft Xbox One video game console had reached 3.9 million units. While the shipments of the system are still behind Sony PlayStation 4, it is evident that they are growing even in in January.

Very early this month Microsoft announced that cumulative sales of the Xbox One game console in calendar 2013 were 3 million units. On Friday the software giant said that life-to-date shipments of the console are 3.9 million, which means that about one million units has been sold in January so far.

“This holiday, we continued to make significant progress in the consumer space, headlined by Xbox One, which launched in 13 markets and sold in 3.9 million units in just over five weeks,” said Amy Hood, chief financial officer of Microsoft.

Sony said earlier this month that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 video game consoles had reached 4.2 million as of December 28, 2013. Two main reasons why Sony has managed to sell more new-generation consoles than Microsoft did are apparent. The PS4 system is now available in 53 countries and territories globally, whereas the XOne can only be purchased in 13 countries. Furthermore, Sony’s PlayStation 4 costs $100/€100/£80 less than the Xbox One while offering similar or better quality of video game. While the XOne comes bundled with the new Kinect sensor, the latter yet has to prove itself valuable for the gamer.

Microsoft Xbox One is based on AMD Fusion custom-designed system-on-chip with eight x86 low-power/low-cost Jaguar cores, AMD Radeon HD graphics with GCN architecture (with 32MB ESRAM/EDRAM buffer) as well as 8GB of DDR3 system memory. The console features 500GB hard disk drive, Blu-ray disc drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity, Gigabit Ethernet, output of video with up to 4K resolution (3840*2160) using HDMI 1.4 as well as 7.1-channel audio. The new Xbox One comes with completely redesigned Kinect sensor that will feature 1920*1080 RGB camera, improved infrared sensor and enhanced voice controls. The console sports a number of functions, e.g. TV-cable pass-through that will seamlessly integrate it into the living room.
