Lenovo Announces New ThinkServers, Ruggedized ThinkPads for Schools

From DailyTech: Lenovo unveiled four new ThinkServer products today alongside a new laptop series made specifically for the classroom.

Lenovo announced the ThinkServer RD340, ThinkServer RD440, ThinkServer TD340 and the ThinkServer SA120. It also introduced the ThinkPad 11e series of laptops.

The 1U ThinkServer RD340 and 2U ThinkServer RD440 are two-processor servers packed with the next-generation Intel Xeon E5-2400 v2 series processors with up to 10 cores each. This offers 25 percent faster performance than previous-generations. Both rack servers support up to 192GB of memory and include hot-swappable storage, integrated RAID and redundant power and cooling. The RD440 supports up to 48TB of internal storage.

These two are ideal for small- to mid-sized education, retail, professional service, state and local government, and healthcare environments.

The ThinkServer RD340 and RD440 are available now and start at $1,179 and $1,439 respectively.

Moving on to the ThinkServer TD340, Lenovo says it packs up to two Intel Xeon E5-2400 v2 series processors. It's configured to support up to 192GB of memory, up to 32TB of internal storage, and has up to six available PCIe/PCI slots for different options such as advanced RAID and 10GB Ethernet.

The TD340 includes enterprise reliability features and can be configured with hot-swap hard disk or solid-state drives, redundant power and integrated RAID, with the capability to add improved performance features for RAID.

Made with school campuses in mind, the ThinkServer TD340 will be available in February, but doesn't have a price tag yet.

The ThinkServer SA120, on the other hand, aims more for datacenter deployments, distributed enterprises and small businesses with its rack-mountable direct attached storage enclosure. It's an optimal tiered storage platform with both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch drive bays in a single 2U enclosure. Just one ThinkServer SA120 DAS enclosure can be configured to support twelve 3.5-inch SAS high-capacity, front-panel drives and four optional rear-panel 2.5-inch SSD drives for expansive direct storage capacity.

The ThinkServer SA120 doesn't have a price just yet, but will be available in February.

Aside from server solutions, Lenovo also announced its ThinkPad 11e series of laptops, which are made for ruggedized classroom performance. The laptops come with some cool options, such as the traditional laptop form factor or Lenovo’s Yoga multimode form. Buyers can also choose between Windows 8 or Chrome OS.

The four newcomers in this laptop series are the ThinkPad Yoga 11e and the ThinkPad 11e (both Windows-based laptops) and the ThinkPad Yoga 11e Chromebook and the ThinkPad 11e Chromebook. All are powered by an Intel processor and have features like rubber bumpers, reinforced ports, and stronger hinges -- because kids can be brutal when it comes to electronics in the classroom.

If any of these laptops caught your attention, they'll all be available this spring. The ThinkPad Yoga 11e and ThinkPad 11e models start at $449 while the ThinkPad Yoga 11e Chromebook and ThinkPad 11e Chromebook models start at $349.
