Netflix 4K Content to Cost Subscribers Extra $3/Month

From DailyTech: With the increasing availability of 4K televisions, consumers are looking for digital content to take full advantage of their Ultra HD (UHD) panels. Netflix has announced its plans to satisfy the needs of those looking for 4K streaming content, but it will cost you according to Variety.

Customers can currently grab a streaming plan from Netflix for $8.99 for an all-you-can eat buffet to its vast digital HD library. However, to access 4K content, users will now have to fork over $11.99 for a family plan. In addition to 4K content, subscribers on the family plan will be able to stream up to four programs at once (up from two in the $8.99 streaming plan).

Netflix says that it is charging more simply because 4K content costs more to acquire and deliver than ‘regular old’ HD content. In addition to the higher cost of entry, Netflix says that users will need a 25 Mbps or faster connection in order to successfully stream 4K content.

For now, 4K content is relatively limited, with supported programming including TV shows like “House of Cards,” “Breaking Bad,” and “The Blacklist.”

And here’s another caveat; not all 4K TVs are supported by Netflix. Your television has to be a 2014 model (or newer) that features an onboard H.265/HEVC decoder to access Netflix’s 4K content.
