From CNET: Streaming media devices, like set-top boxes that connect to a television or sticks that plug into an HDMI port, have proven even more popular this year than last, a new study shows.
During the first three quarters of 2014, 10 percent of US households that have a broadband connection have bought at least one streaming media player, Parks Associates reported on Tuesday.
Roku's line of streaming set-top boxes, which include a wide range of apps, including Netflix, were most popular, securing 29 percent of sales so far this year. The Google Chromecast, which plugs into an HDMI port to stream media, is the second-most-popular device with 20 percent share. Apple TV's streaming box took third place with 17 percent share.
Streaming media players have been hitting store shelves at a rapid clip this year. While Apple has kept the same streaming box on store shelves for the last couple of years, Roku has been consistently updating its line. Google Chromecast has also appealed to customers who are on a budget, costing just $35. Amazon has offered both a set-top box, called the Fire TV, and a new HDMI dongle it calls the Fire TV Stick.
