From DailyTech: BlackBerry, Ltd. (TSE:BB) has trimmed its losses under new CEO John Chen, but it remains a shell of its former glory moving only roughly 2.4 million smartphones [PDF] in the third calendar quart of the year (BlackBerry's fiscal Q2 2015). But in a rather unexpected development, it appears that a newly announed model -- the BlackBerry Classic is actually releasing some sort of pent-up demand and seeing something BlackBerry hasn't seen in years -- strong demand.
The smartphone itself is rumored to have a rather unimpressive spec, with a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) Snapdragon S4 system-on-a-chip under the hood, along with 2 GB of LPDDR2 memory. Despite have, in effect, a three generations old chip (given that the high end has since moved on to the Snapdragon 800, then the Snapdragon 801, and, most recently, the Snapdragon 805), BlackBerry fans seem more than willing to commit.
BlackBerry announced that the device -- currently available for pre-order-- has "sold out", at least temporarily, in North American sales (U.S., Canadian, and Mexican). Stock does remain in other regions for now. North America is expected to see new stock of the BlackBerry Classic by early January, at the latest.
Currently available for predorder, the phone has been teased at, with the official announcement and spec details to be aired later this week, on Dec. 17. The phone is expected to run BlackBerry's latest and greatest QNX-based BlackBerry OS 10.3.
