Amazon slashes Music Unlimited subscriptions for students

From The Verge: Amazon has slashed its subscription fee for Amazon Music Unlimited to $4.99 per month for students, as spotted by TechCrunch. Amazon is also offering Music Unlimited at an even cheaper rate for Prime Student subscribers — at $6 for 6 months. The discounts are available for university students starting from today, and is a substantial discount off the $9.99 Amazon charges for non-Prime customers. Prime customers currently pay $7.99 per month.

Amazon’s Music Unlimited was launched in late 2016 as a competitor to other on-demand music streaming services like Apple Music and Spotify. Apple Music has been offering a student-tier level subscription of $4.99 a month since May 2016, while Spotify also offers its Premium service at $4.99 a month to students. Spotify currently has around 60 million paid subscribers, compared to 27 million and 16 million for Apple Music and Amazon respectively.
