Galaxy Note 8 Will Stream Netflix in 4K HDR

From PC Mag: With the introduction of the PS4 Pro and soon-to-be-launched Xbox One X, people aren't just talking about 4K resolution anymore. High Dynamic Range (HDR) is also becoming a key term and feature, so much so that even smartphones are adding support for it.

Netflix supports HDR on its 4K streaming plan, but the number of smartphones capable of viewing it is limited to just three: the LG V30, and Sony's Xperia XZ1 and XZ Premium. However, on September 15, that device count will increase to four.

As Sammobile reports, Netflix will support HDR content streaming through its app on the Galaxy Note 8, as confirmed on its support pages. Samsung introduced HDR support on the Galaxy Note 7, Galaxy S8, and S8+, but Netflix chose not to support those devices. That may change in the future, but for now the Galaxy Note 8 will be the first Samsung smartphone to playback Netflix in 4K HDR.

The combination of that wrap-around display, support for HDR10, and screen brightness of up to 1,200 nits, is sure to make for a pleasant viewing experience. Although, watching that same stream on a 50-inch+ 4K TV is still going to be preferable.

Netflix's streaming plans breakdown into three tiers: Basic, Standard, and Premium. Basic costs $8 per month, Standard is $10, and Premium is $12. To access 4K HDR streams on your phone or TV you'll need to subscribe to the Premium plan, which also gets you up to four screens of streaming at any one time.
