EA Acquires GameFly's Cloud Gaming Tech

From PC Mag: This week, Electronic Arts announced the acquisition of GameFly's cloud gaming technology assets and personnel in what looks like a bid to take a more active role in offering access to games in the cloud.

For many, GameFly is remembered as a service offering game rentals by mail for a whole range of consoles and handheld hardware. More recently, the company targeted cloud gaming, offering a growing range of games playable through a set top box, streaming stick, or smart TV. The only other piece of kit required was a controller.

Ken Moss, CTO of EA, made it clear the company wants in on cloud gaming by stating, "Cloud gaming is an exciting frontier that will help us to give even more players the ability to experience games on any device from anywhere. We're thrilled to bring this talented team's expertise into EA as we continue to innovate and expand the future of games and play."

The GameFly team EA acquired is actually based in Caesarea, Israel, and it looks as though that's where they will remain to "continue exploring new ways for players to access and experience games from any device." As to what this means for EA specifically, the focus is clearly going to be on allowing access to its games on more devices, but also in markets where EA currently doesn't have a presence.
