From PC Mag: It can be quite frustrating to purchase a shiny new set of wireless headphones only to watch video and find the audio isn't perfectly in sync. That's why Qualcomm developed the aptX low latency audio codec. It can be equally frustrating to endure lower quality wireless audio when the source is very high quality. That's why Qualcomm developed aptX HD. Now we're set to get aptX Adaptive, which is meant to offer the best of both worlds.
Qualcomm refers to aptX Adaptive as the solution to "dynamic next-gen premium wireless audio" and it's basically trying to cover all bases with one wireless audio codec, which is great news for consumers.
Adaptive will apparently detect what type of content is being played and adjust automatically. So if you are watching video, it will focus on low latency to ensure everything stays in sync, but if it's an audio-only source, then high quality will be the focus.
