EC is Optimistic on Sun/Oracle Deal Approval

From DailyTech: Sun Microsystems and Oracle entered into an agreement where former would be purchased by latter. The deal is not yet complete and while it was approved by the U.S. in August, the purchase was met with objections when it hit the European Commission for approval.

The EC issued a statement of objections to the deal. In November, officials from the U.S. government and representatives from both companies announced they would plead the case for the deal in front of EC members. U.S. Senators began pressuring the EC to approve the deal in late November with 59 Senators pointing out that there was the risk of thousands of jobs lost of the EC pushed its investigation back or stopped the closing of the deal.

Reuters reports that the EC is now warming a bit to the merger after Sun and Oracle promised to introduce measures that would ease the concerns that the EC had about competition in the market. The EC stated that it was optimistic that a "satisfactory outcome" could be reached.

The EC has until January 27 to approve or deny the merger. To get the deal pushed though the EC, Oracle promised that it would keep the market open allowing other firms to make software for the MySQL database. Oracle went so far as to say that it would make MySQL more open that Sun had when it owned the software and promised to set up a separate customer advisory board of MySQL users.
