From X-bit Labs: Samsung Electronics on Tuesday released its new lineup of EcoGreen hard disk drives (HDDs) with massive storage capacity and reduced power consumption. The new hard drives will definitely not offer truly high performance due to 5400rpm spindle speed, which is not high enough for drives that carry large amounts of data, however, which may be sufficient for a quiet HDDs for storing rarely accessed data. Samsung EcoGreen F3EG hard drives in 3.5” form-factor are available in 1.5TB and 2TB versions, feature Serial ATA-300 interconnection protocol with Native Command Queuing support and come with either 16MB or 32MB buffer. Samsung declares 8.9ms average seek time as well as 5.56ms average seek time. Even though Samsung remains tight-lipped over exact power consumption of F3EG, it claims that the drive has 40% lower in power consumption in idle mode and 10% lower in reading/writing mode than competitive drives. The F3EG utilizes Samsung’s EcoTriangle technology to provide eco-friendly components, low-power and low-noise operation technology to its “EcoGreen” hard drives. The drive also received a zero percent failure rate in the unstable voltage environment test, according to the company. Since EcoGreen F3EG is Samsung’s first HDDs to utilize 500GB platters, the novelties may be considered somewhat experimental and it is logical to expect the manufacturer to release hard drives with faster spindle speed featuring the new platters.
