Apple Grows Market Share in Advertising as Others Decline

From DailyTech: Advertising online is a huge business and the leader of the pack traditionally is Google with its massive and very popular advertising network. Google, however, isn’t the only major tech firm that runs online advertising networks. There are also competitive efforts from Apple, Microsoft, and several other firms.

IDC has issued numbers that show Apple's advertising network could have 21% of the market by the end of the year. Google will see its share of the advertising market drop to 21% according to IDC's numbers. If Google has 21% of the market by year's end, which will be a significant decline from the 27% of the market it held last year.

Microsoft is expected to see its advertising network decline from 10% it held last year to 7%. Google and other advertising firms are working hard to grow their networks and take a larger portion of the advertising pie by buying smaller firms. Yahoo is expected to have 9% of the market down from 12% the previous year.

Apple purchased Quattro Wireless for $500 million in January, buying its way into the online advertising market. Apple CEO Steve Jobs then unveiled the iAd network in June at WWDC during his keynote speech. When Apple gobbled up Quattro Wireless, the company held only 9% of the market as of 2009. Apple has worked hard to grow the business in the few months that it has owned Quattro and has done an impressive job.
