Shipments of Samsung Galaxy Tab Slate Reach Million of Units

From X-bit Labs: After about one and a half months on the market across the world, sales of Samsung Galaxy Tab multimedia slate have hit one million sales milestone, according to the company. The interest towards the tablet seems to be growing as the Christmas season is getting near and it will be interesting to see how many more "Tabs" Samsung will manage to sell before the end of the calendar year.

On the fourth of December Samsung spokesperson Kim Titus said in an interview with eWeek web-site that that one million of Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 slates had been sold. The number seems to be a success as the device first hit the market in late October. Unfortunately, it is unclear whether the number means one million Samsung Galaxy Tab has been sold to end-users or sold-in to retailers.

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile started to offer the Galaxy Tab at various price points with and without contracts in the U.S. back in mid-November. A Black Friday sales rush for holiday shoppers in the United States likely spurred Tab sales in the country, but that is an unconfirmed piece of information.

Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 is based on Google Android 2.2 operating system that is primarily designed for mobile phones and was tailored for slate device by Samsung itself. The device is powered by ARM Cortex-A8 1.0GHz processor, PowerVR SGX 540 graphics processor, features 512MB of random access memory (RAM) and either 16GB or 32GB of flash storage. The product is equipped with 7" screen with 1024*600 resolution, 3.0MP camera with flash, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 802.11a/b/g/n controller, GSM/GPRS/EDGE/HSUPA/HSDPA, Bluetooth 3.0, DLNA and so on. The GT-P1000 weighs 380 grams.

Even though sales of Galaxy Tab cannot be compared to sales of Apple iPad, which was sold in 7.5 million quantity, it should be noted that the device is somewhat experimental. The tablet from Samsung uses Google Android 2.2 that was not designed for slates and user experience may not be excellent. Besides, availability of tablet software for Android 2.2 is not wide. In fact, even Samsung itself expected to sell one million of slates this year. The number will likely be exceeded significantly.
