Windows Phone 7 Update May Be Delayed a Week or Two

From DailyTech: According to a post [translated] on Microsoft France's official Windows Phone 7 blog, the OS's first major update may be bumped back a week or two for unspecified reasons. The post has since been edited, but not before many took note of it. ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley claims that the update will be pushed back to March 21.

But wait, you say, didn't Microsoft just roll out an update to Windows Phone 7 handsets? Well it did, but that was just a minor update which included improvements to Windows Phone 7's update process (an update to updates, so to speak). This update was rolled out in preparation for the major update -- which will bring features like copy and paste.

That preparatory update had some issues of its own, even killing some handsets. Microsoft was quite open about these problems, discussing them at length. But it eventually fixed these issues and the update to the updates process completed its rollout to WP7 customers.

So if the problem was fixed, what is responsible for this delay? That's hard to say. But it's possible that Microsoft is a bit spooked after its last update killed some users phones (which may be the fault of Samsung on the firmware side). Microsoft may be taking a bit more of a reserved approach this time around, looking to test on all its hardware models before a widespread release.

In the grand scheme of things that's probably a decent idea and one or two weeks isn't going to make a huge difference to the average user. However, the downside is that amid struggling sales, the delay will likely given the platform's detractors one more reason to prophecy the platform's doom.
