AMD May Announce New CEO Relatively Soon

From X-bit Labs: Advanced Micro Devices has been living without chief executive officer (CEO) for over two months now, which definitely poses a problem as the company essentially lacks a solid and clear long-term strategy. However, an analyst claims that the company has a lineup of people to choose from and that it may announce its new CEO relatively shortly.

“We believe that the company has a good selection of candidates lined up and that an announcement will be made relatively soon," said Romit Shah, a chip analyst with Nomura Securities, reports Tech Trader Daily.

Dirk Meyer resigned from AMD in early January. It is widely believed that the board of directors was not satisfied with the company's plans in regards of mobile devices, such as tablets. Thomas Seifert, originally chief financial officer of the chip designer, acts as interim CEO.

At present it is completely unclear who may be AMD's next chief executive. Many believe that AMD's current executives, such as Rick Bergman, who joined AMD after the acquisition of ATI Technologies and helped to revive the company's graphics business, may become AMD's next leader. Another names include Pat Gelsinger from EMC Corp. James Lederer from Qualcomm and many others.

Given the fact that several executives who worked in various server-related divisions at AMD also resigned following Mr. Meyer, it is unlikely that the new CEO will come from the server industry. On the other hand, AMD's short-term success will not be determined by tablets or other emerging devices, but by the company's ability to correctly position its accelerated processing units (APUs), central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units against competing chips from Intel Corp. and Nvidia Corp.
