Intel Set to Detail Itanium Kittson Later This Month

From X-bit Labs: Intel Corp. and Hewlett Packard plan to reveal the future of Itanium platform and architecture on an event on the 26th of April, a source revealed. The event will be concentrated on the next-generation Itanium code-named Kittson.

The two companies plan to reveal their plans concerning the next-generation Itanium code-named "Kittson", a chip that nobody knows about. Intel Itanium "Poulson" chip is due in 2012 and is expected to bring significant performance improvements. Kittson is projected to "double" (according to Kirg Skaugen, Intel's server chief) performance, which probably means that it will have sixteen cores and will be available sometimes in 2014. The information was revealed to X-bit labs by a person with knowledge of the plan.

"They have already briefed several members of the analyst community," said the source, who wanted to remain anonymous.

The event is expected not only to deliver certain details regarding Itanium, but also sketch the future of the IA64 architecture in general. Those details are likely to determine the prospect of the platform, including the development of software as well as hardware.
