AMD Introduces Low-Cost, Mainstream Radeon HD 6000 Graphics Products

From X-bit Labs: Advanced Micro Devices has officially introduced two new Radeon HD 6000-series "Northern Islands" chips code-named Caicos and Turks. The new graphics processing units (GPUs) are priced in less than $100 and bring new performance heights to the entry-level and mainstream performance segments.

"With the newest additions to the AMD Radeon HD 6000 graphics family, we’re providing customers with a number of compelling products priced below $100 that enable exceptional image quality and game performance while remaining incredibly energy efficient and easy to install," said Matt Skynner, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD graphics division.

The new ATI Radeon HD 6000-series GPUs support all the advantages of the Northern Islands family of products, including support for DirectX 11, OpenCL 1.1, OpenGL 4.1 application programming interfaces (APIs), hardware-accelerated playback of all high-definition video formats (including Blu-ray 3D) with video quality enhancements, Eyefinity multi-display technology with up to three/four monitors support, support of stereoscopic 3D output and so on.

The latest family is designed for those, who upgrade from integrated graphics cores. Keeping in mind that AMD is just about to release its new A-series code-named Llano accelerated processing units (APUs) with high-performance integrated graphics core (with 160, 320 or 400 stream processors), the chips were designed with the idea to enhance performance as substantially as possible. For example, entry-level Radeon HD 6450 "Caicos" has two times more stream processors than its predecessor Radeon HD 5450 "Cedar" and up to 130% higher compute power. Meanwhile, the mainstream Radeon HD 6670 "Turks" offers moderate improvements compared to Radeon HD 5670 "Redwood" and provides only up to 24% higher compute power.

AMD Radeon HD 6450 "Caicos" has 160 stream processors, 8 texture units, 4 render back ends and 750MHz clock-speed. The chip has 64-bit memory bus and can be equipped with DDR3 or GDDR5 memory. AMD estimates that the boards will be available for roughly $55.
