Graphics Shipments up 6.3%, JPR says 2011 is an Anomalous Year

From DailyTech: The latest figures are in from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) on the number of graphics chips shipped for Q2 2011. JPR reports that Q2 2011 was higher year-over-year compared to the same quarter in 2010 for graphics chip shipments.

JPR calls the quarter part of what is shaping up to be an anomalous year in the computer market. Typically, Q2 is a slower quarter in the computer world, yet this year sales were up significantly compared to previous years. The growth is also attributed in part to inventory building for back to school season and the coming holiday season.

JPR's figures show that Intel has the clear lead in graphics shipments with 60.7% in Q2 2011. That number is a 19.6% increase compared to the previous quarter. NVIDIA was next with 17.5% of the graphics market for Q2 2011 compared to 19.9% the previous quarter. Following NVIDIA in third place is AMD with 21.2% of the market during the quarter showing a decrease from Q1 and the same quarter of 2012. VIA was fourth with 0.5% of the market, Matrox was fifth at a meek 0.04% of the market, and SiS was last with no measurable part of the market.

Overall graphic chip shipments for the quarter year over year increased to 140 million units up from 22 million units in Q2 2010. The overall growth rate for the quarter compared to last year was 14.2%. JPR reports that more than 84 million PCs shipped around the world in Q2 2011, up 2.4% from last year. JPR points out that the numbers reflect not only desktops and notebooks during the quarter, but netbooks, embedded, handhelds, and tablets that are ARM-based.
