Gogo to Launch 4x Faster Wi-Fi 4 on Virgin America Flights in 2012

From DailyTech: Airline companies have been working to improve in-flight entertainment systems in order to enhance the traveler's flight experience. For instance, Virgin America announced last week that it is partnering with Lufthansa to incorporate the BoardConnect platform into the next generation Red in-flight entertainment system, and Boeing took 250 of its employees on a new 787 Dreamliner to test its in-flight entertainment system that was developed with partners Panasonic and Thales.

Now, in-flight Internet company Gogo is making the traveler’s experience even better with its new ATG-4 service, which allows in-flight entertainment systems to deliver faser wireless speeds.

The ATG-4 service will offer wireless speeds that are four times as fast as current services. It will initially launch on Virgin America’s fleet in the first half of 2012.

“[The ATG-4] will improve aircraft Wi-Fi capacity to the plane by approximately four times the current performance through the addition of directional antenna, dual-modem and EV-DO Rev. B technologies,” said Gogo in a press release.

In addition to faster wireless services, Gogo is introducing its Gogo Vision in-flight video rental service on all American Airlines planes in 2012. The video rental service, which launched on 15 American Airlines planes last month, offers a streaming library of over 200 movies and TV shows. Gogo Vision will charge $.99 per TV show and $3.99 per movie as an introductory offer through October 15, as well as a free Wi-Fi session for future flights.
