Apple Confirms Next-Gen iPhone Launch on October 4

From X-bit Labs: In its invitations to a press conference sent to various media outlets, Apple has confirmed that it would formally introduce its next-generation iPhone smartphone on the fourth of October, 2011. Given Apple's typical level of corporate secrecy it is natural not to expect any credible leaks concerning the new iPhone, or iPhones, before this date.

The invitation to the press consists of iOS icons that point to "let's talk iPhone" press conference at 10AM on October 4th in Apple's campus in Cupertino, California. The invitation clearly points on a formal unveiling of the next-gen iPhone, which will become available shortly after the press event.

Not a lot is known about the next-generation iPhone. Some believe that it will be an updated version of the current-generation iPhone 4 with dual-core Apple A5 processor that sports improved graphics accelerator and some other innovations. The so-called iPhone 4S rumour is indirectly confirmed by photos of an iPhone prototype in white iPhone 4 enclosure and with A5 system-on-chip. Nonetheless, many believe that the "true" next-gen iPhone 5 will not only feature a new SoC inside, but will sport a different form-factor and a larger screen. Apple can naturally launch two smartphones this time to address different customers.

"We believe a refreshed iPhone 5 will boast enough physical improvements to drive another strong adoption cycle. Although screen resolution should remain the same, we expect an improved front/back camera resolution, faster network technology, a faster A5 processor, improved graphics performance, and potentially thinner/lighter form factor," Maynard Um, an analyst with UBS, wrote in a note to clients, according to a Barron's blog.
