Steve Jobs Condemned HP's PC Spinoff: It is Tragic

From X-bit Labs: The passed-away co-founder of Apple did not share the opinion that spinning off or selling the personal computer business will do anything good for Hewlett-Packard. Instead, he considered the idea to get rid of certain divisions as some kind of a tragic defeat.

"Hewlett and Packard built a great company; and they thought they had left it in good hands. But now it is being dismembered and destroyed. It is tragic. I hope I have left a stronger legacy so that will never happen to Apple," said Steve Jobs at his last meeting with the Apple's board of directors in August '11, according to Walter Isaacson's official biography of Steve Jobs.

HP discontinued its Palm smartphones and tablets this summer and said that it would consider the fates of its Palm and PC divisions and either sells them or spins them off. It is pretty clear that HP would ditch its webOS division and business. Hewlett-Packard is also set to make the PC unit-concerning decision by the end of the month.

Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard initiated the company with an oscillator in 1940s and at present HP is the biggest IT company in the world. Without the PC business, the firm barely remain on this position. Moreover, ceasing investments into consumer products' R&D HP risks to lose its leading-edge technologist position on the market over time.
