Launch Sales of Nintendo Wii U Lower Compared to First Week Sales of Wii

From X-bit Labs: Nintendo on Monday said that it had sold 400 thousand Wii U game consoles in the first week of sales. The number is lower compared to 600 thousand Wii consoles sold in the first eight days of availability back six years ago.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, said in an interview with Cnet News web-site that the company sold 1.2 million game consoles, including Wii U, Wii, 3DS, and DS, last week. The company shipped 700 thousand home game consoles, 400 thousand Wii U as well as 300 thousand Wii. According to Nintendo, it failed to meet demand for its new game consoles and not everyone could buy the product.

"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock. Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately," said Mr. Fils-Aime.

On November 28, 2006, Nintendo disclosed that it had sold over 600 thousand Wii consoles in the first eight days of launch in the Americas. Including the sales of accessories and games, Nintendo's Wii-related revenue hit $190 million in its first week. It is unclear how much money did the Wii U make in the first week of availability.
