Sony rolls out Android 4.1 to Xperia smartphones

From CNET News.com: Owners of Sony's Xperia T and Xperia V can expect a dose of Android 4.1 sometime soon.

Sony said yesterday that it's begun deploying Jelly Bean to its initial batch of Xperia smartphones. The Xperia T and Xperia V are first on the list, while the Xperia TX is due sometime in March. The rollout will continue to ramp up over this month and next, Sony added.

Xperia owners will receive a notification when the update is available for their model phones. Most users will be able to download the software over the air. But some may have to install it through their computers using Sony's PC Companion or Bridge for Mac software.

The update includes Android 4.1 Jelly Bean along with Sony's own lineup of new and improved features. Meshing its Xperia software with Android 4.1, the company promises a host of enhancements.

The Walkman, Album, and Movies apps have been tweaked to be more intuitive. Users will be able to customize their screens with widgets that automatically resize. Sorting apps in the tray should also prove easier.

A new search function within the tray helps people find their apps. And the camera feature has been beefed up with a better viewfinder and a quicker way to switch between front and back.

Xperia users can check Sony's update page to see if and when Jelly Bean is ready to spill onto their phones.
